Bird Droppings on Paint? Act Fast, Here's the Real Fix

A splat on the bonnet or roof looks like a minor annoyance, but bird droppings are genuinely one of the most urgent contamination types to deal with — leaving them isn't just untidy, it can cause real damage.

The real cause

Bird droppings are acidic, and that acid starts reacting with your clear coat almost as soon as it lands — especially in direct sun, which speeds the reaction up. Left for even a day or two in hot weather, droppings can etch a permanent mark into the clear coat that no amount of washing will remove afterwards. This is a genuine urgency angle, not exaggerated marketing — the damage risk is real and time-sensitive in a way most other paint contamination isn't.

The real fix

Remove droppings as soon as you reasonably can, with a real quick detailer rather than wiping dry or scrubbing — wiping dry risks dragging grit through the paint, and the dropping needs to be properly lifted and dissolved, not just smeared.

If a dropping has already been sitting for a while and you can see or feel etching once it's removed, a proper wax or sealant reapplied over the area helps protect it going forward — but it won't undo etching that's already happened.
