How to Remove Bird Droppings Safely

Bird droppings are acidic and can etch into clear coat surprisingly quickly, especially in hot weather — so speed matters more than the exact product you use.

Act quickly

The longer droppings sit, especially in direct sun, the more likely they are to leave a permanent mark or etch into the paint. Deal with them as soon as you reasonably can rather than waiting for your next full wash.

Soften before you wipe

Never wipe dry droppings straight off — the grit inside them will scratch the paint. Soak a microfibre cloth in water (or a diluted car shampoo solution) and lay it over the mark for a minute or two to soften it first.

Lift, don’t rub

Once softened, gently lift the residue away rather than scrubbing. Rinse the area with clean water afterwards to remove any remaining acidic residue.

Check for etching

If a mark has been left for a long time, you may see a dull spot or faint ring left in the clear coat even after cleaning. Light cases can often be improved with a machine polish; deeper etching may need paint correction from a professional.

Protect against future marks

A layer of wax or sealant will not stop droppings from landing, but it does make the surface more slippery and buys you more time before they etch in, and makes them easier to remove.
