The Right Order to Clean Your Car, Step by Step

Cleaning a car in the wrong order means undoing work you have already done — polishing before you have properly washed, or vacuuming before you have finished knocking dust loose from the dash. This is the order that avoids repeating steps.

1. Wheels and tyres first

Wheels carry the heaviest, most abrasive grime (brake dust, road tar). Clean them before the bodywork so any overspray or dirty runoff does not land on paint you have already washed.

2. Pre-rinse and snow foam or pre-wash

Rinse the whole car, then apply a pre-wash or snow foam to loosen dirt before any mitt touches the paint.

3. Wash the bodywork

Use the two-bucket method, top to bottom, then rinse thoroughly.

4. Dry

Dry with clean microfibre towels before moving on — polishing or waxing a wet surface does not work properly.

5. Glass

Clean windows and mirrors after drying the bodywork, so you are not dragging a glass cleaner through wax or sealant residue later.

6. Polish, wax, or sealant

Apply any paint protection once the surface is completely clean and dry.

7. Interior last

Vacuum and wipe down the interior last, after the exterior is done and you are not tracking outdoor dirt back in and out of the car.

Following this order roughly halves the amount of re-work most people end up doing on a full clean.
