Understanding Your Car Dashboard Warning Lights
What red, amber and green dashboard lights actually mean for how urgently to act.
Dashboard warning lights use colour for a reason — knowing roughly what each colour means helps you judge whether something can wait until your next service or needs attention right now.
Red lights: stop and check
Red generally means a serious issue that could cause damage or affect safety — things like the oil pressure warning, engine temperature warning, or brake system warning. If a red light appears, especially with an unusual noise or smell, it is usually best to stop safely and check rather than continue driving.
Amber/orange lights: get it checked soon
Amber typically indicates a fault that needs attention but is not necessarily an immediate emergency — the engine management light, ABS warning, or tyre pressure warning are common examples. It is still worth booking this in promptly rather than ignoring it long-term.
Green and blue lights: informational
These usually just confirm something is switched on — indicators, main beam, fog lights — and do not indicate a fault.
The engine management light specifically
This one covers a huge range of possible issues, from a loose fuel cap to a genuine engine fault. If it comes on steadily, get it diagnosed when convenient; if it flashes, that usually points to something more serious and is worth checking sooner.
When in doubt
Your owner’s manual has a full symbol guide specific to your car — worth a quick check the first time an unfamiliar light appears rather than guessing.
